Meet Your ATPE Board Members: Yvette Milner (Region 20)
ATPE is proud to bring you this series of posts from your board members. The ATPE Board of Directors is made up of 20 regional members, who are elected by the members in their region; four state officers, who are elected annually by the entire House of Delegates at the ATPE Summit; and the most recent state past president.
Today’s post is from Region 20 Director Yvette Milner.
Why did you get involved in a leadership role at ATPE?
After attending my first convention in 1991, I knew I would be involved in ATPE for the rest of my career. I was in awe as I watched the business of the association happening right in front of me. Listening to members share their opinions on the priorities of the association and what we stand for was enough to get me hooked. The following school year I served as a campus representative. I haven’t looked back.
What is your favorite part of serving on the ATPE board?
Being elected to serve on the board of directors has been a highlight of my career. It is such an honor. The best part of being on the board is working will the ATPE staff and other board members. We all have the same priority—making ATPE the best it can be. It is awe-inspiring to work with such a focused group of educators.
How has being on the board helped your region?
Being on the board has helped me share information with region and local unit officers so that we can all better understand the diversity of membership across the state. In summarizing ATPE business after each board meeting, I strive to help region members understand how and why decisions were made.
What advice would you give to others who might be interested in serving on the board?
Being on the board opens your mind to the internal business of our association. It is an enlightening and challenging position, which requires a time commitment. If you feel strongly about taking your membership to the next level, I encourage you to consider serving on the board.
Can you share something fun about yourself that our members might not know?
I am a thrift store junkie. Don’t think I’m weird if I tell you that I got my pants for a dollar or shorts for a quarter.
