Meet the March Volunteer of the Month
March is generally a great time to pause and take a moment to acknowledge all of the good things this year has brought—especially before the busyness of spring hits. It feels a little different this year with all that’s happening around us, but all the more reason to celebrate the good that is happening, too!
For ATPE, it’s time to recognize our March Volunteer of the Month! Nominees for Volunteer of the Month are those who go above and beyond the call of duty in their commitment to ATPE and public education—volunteers who exhibit outstanding leadership and tireless efforts.
Meet our March 2020 Volunteer of the Month, Karen Taylor, Ph.D., of Schreiner University ATPE! Karen is the director of field experience and an associate professor at the university. She’s been with ATPE for the entirety of her career—30-plus years!
Why did you choose ATPE?
I initially chose ATPE because it was the one my campus endorsed, and now because I believe in this organization, and I want my students to be involved with an association that looks out for them!
What made you want to be an educator?
I grew up in a time that didn’t recognize dyslexia. I struggled in school because of my dyslexia. I decided to be the best teacher I never had. I never want another child to experience what I did.
What is your favorite part of your job?
Working with my students. They have so much to offer their future students! Even though I am in higher education, I still love walking into the classroom. It’s where I belong.
What is your biggest hope for the future of Texas public schools?
Recognition for teachers as professionals. Teachers are underpaid for the work they do. Things are better than they were, but improvement is needed.
