Announcing January’s Volunteer of the Month

Happy New Year, ATPE members! Let’s start the new decade off right by honoring the hard work of one of your fellow members through our Volunteer of the Month program. Nominees for Volunteer of the Month are those who go above and beyond the call of duty in their commitment to ATPE and public education—volunteers who exhibit outstanding leadership and tireless efforts.

Meet our January 2020 Volunteer of the Month, Madonna Felan of Northside (20) ATPE. Madonna is a retired elementary special education teacher and currently works as an elementary substitute teacher in Northside ISD in San Antonio. She’s been with ATPE for 12 years, serving as a campus representative and local unit membership chair, secretary, and president, as well as Region 20 secretary.

Why did you choose ATPE?
I originally joined ATPE for the affordable protection*. Now I am a member for the many benefits: a strong voice at the Capitol; discounts; the camaraderie at local, region and state meetings; and affordable protection.

What made you want to be an educator?
My mother was an educator, and I saw the positive impact she had on others’ lives. I wanted to be someone who could make a difference.

What advice would you give to a new educator coming into your position?
Make a connection with students. You need to know your students in order for them to feel safe in your classroom so they can learn.

What is the most important thing Texas educators can do for their profession?
The most important thing educators can do for their profession is go out and be an informed voter!

Share your favorite moment as an educator.
My favorite moment was when a 4-year-old said “Momma” for the first time to his mother, and she wept with joy.
