Educator Stress and Resignations

The ATPE Member Legal Services Department has fielded an unusual number of calls since the beginning of the 2019–20 school year from educators who feel they simply cannot take it another day and have either turned in a resignation or are planning to do so. We can’t say there is any single reason why so many teachers seem to be at their wits’ end so early in the school year. Veteran teachers know this feeling is usually reserved for April or May.

Educators, even those feeling overwhelmed, should remember that their employment contracts not only provide legal protections but also legal obligations. As we explained in the summer issue of ATPE News, teachers who simply leave their positions without being released by the district may ultimately be penalized with a suspension of their teaching certificates. While there are grounds for leaving that are considered good cause and thus provide a defense, any teacher considering leaving their position before the end of the school year should first learn what they need to do to protect themselves. Teachers should also remember there may be other, better options for them than resigning, such as leave they may be eligible to use.
