Meet November’s Volunteer of the Month

November is a perfect time to pause and give thanks. At ATPE, we’re thankful for all our hardworking volunteers who help make ATPE the top educators’ association in Texas.

Giving thanks is a key reason we have our ATPE Volunteer of the Month recognition program. Nominees for ATPE Volunteer of the Month are volunteers who go above and beyond the call of duty in their commitment to ATPE and public education—volunteers who exhibit outstanding leadership and tireless efforts. Volunteers like our November 2019 Volunteer of the Month, Susan Letourneau of Lumberton ATPE!

Susan is a teacher in Lumberton ISD, where she has been her entire 19-year teaching career. Currently, she teaches AP calculus, AP physics, pre-AP physics, and principles of engineering. Susan is also the Math Department Chair and the Project Lead the Way engineering coordinator.

How long have you been an ATPE member? Why did you choose ATPE?
I have been an ATPE member since 2000, for my entire teaching career. I choose ATPE for the excellent advocacy, legal advice*, and programs.

What made you want to be an educator?
I left my job in industry as an engineer because I always wanted to work with students as a teacher, advisor, and mentor.

What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of the job is working with the students. It is awesome when they have that “aha moment” and finally understand a difficult concept. It is also rewarding when they return to high school and tell me thanks for helping them get ready for college/jobs.

What’s new in your district this year?
Our district is part of a Student Spaceflight Experiment Program grant this year. The students have developed experiment proposals that will be reviewed by researchers. The winning experiment will fly to the International Space Station in 2020, and the NASA astronauts will perform the experiment. We will also have an art contest to design mission patches for the flight. In February we are having a community-wide celebration of the art and experiment competitions. I am honored to serve as the community program director for the grant.

Share your favorite moment as an educator.
One of my favorite moments as a teacher was last year when one of our robotics teams won second place at the state TCEA Robotics competition. The students worked hard and were so excited to do well in the competition.

What’s your favorite Texas vacation?
My favorite Texas vacation is a trip to Galveston Island. My husband Dave and I enjoy walking on the beach, watching the dolphins from the ferry, and eating delicious seafood.

Share something fun about yourself.
My mother’s friend knew Albert Einstein, which is fun for a science nerd like me!
