Here are some other important dates to note:

  • Tuesday, Feb. 20: Early voting begins
  • Friday, Feb. 23: Last day to apply for a ballot to vote by mail
  • Friday, March 1: Early voting ends
  • Tuesday, March 5: Election Day
During the primaries, you may choose to vote in either the Republican or the Democratic primary. Texas has open primaries, so you do not have to “register” for a party to vote. And your primary vote in no way restricts your choices on the November ballot. The primary election determines which candidate will represent a party on the November ballot, but in districts that have been drawn to be either heavily Republican or heavily Democratic, the primary election winner is often unopposed or doesn’t face strong opposition in the general election. In other words, it’s often the primary election and not the general election that determines the ultimate winner.

This is why it is vital for educators to vote at every opportunity during the election cycle, including the primaries. Education issues such as school vouchers, teacher pay, and funding for schools were debated during the most recent legislative session and many of the subsequent special sessions. It’s more important than ever for educators to make their voices heard and support legislators that support them. Don’t miss your first chance to do that this election year. Make sure you are registered and ready to vote and tell your friends and colleagues to do the same!
