Building Relationships with Non-English Speaking Students
5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 22

What are the smartest strategies for building relationships with non-English speaking students? Join two veteran educators and Leadership ATPE alumni—first grade teacher Miguel Renteria and high school math resource teacher Gail Wood-Rush—as they share ideas for setting daily and weekly goals to help these students achieve success. No matter the student’s age, your goal is to help them maneuver through a normal class day without getting lost in the crowd.

Presenters:

  • Miguel Renteria has taught first grade for nine years and worked at a Title I campus where students spoke 22 different languages and dialects. Education is his second career.
  • Gail Wood-Rush is a high school math resource teacher and teaches at the disciplinary alternative education program (DAEP) campus in Early ISD. She is a Texas Midwest Cities Network (TMCN) mentor and also the district’s ESL coordinator. This is her 15th year in education, which is also her second career.
