The nation's highest honor for teachers of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics is the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). This year's awards will honor science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science teachers working in seventh through 12th grade.

PAEMST awardees serve as models for their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of mathematics and science education. Since 1983, more than 5,200 teachers have been recognized for their contributions in the classroom and to their profession.

Presidential awardees receive a certificate signed by the U.S. president; a trip to Washington, D.C., to attend a series of recognition events and participate in professional development opportunities; and a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation.

Selection committees choose up to six finalists (three from each award category) for recognition at the state and jurisdiction level; they are strongly encouraged to forward finalists in each of the STEM areas. States and jurisdictions review applications and then select up to six state finalists by March 10, 2023.

Students, parents, colleagues, and supervisors may nominate a teacher to apply. Teachers may also apply directly. Each teacher completes an online application that includes a written narrative and a video that demonstrates teaching excellence.

Applications for science, technology, engineering, or mathematics teachers in grades seven through 12 are now open. The deadline to be nominated for this year’s award is Jan. 9, 2023. Applications must be completed by Feb. 6, 2023. Nominate a teacher or apply today at paemst.org.
