Meet September’s Volunteer of the Month, Pat Duran

With the 2018-19 school year upon us, it’s time to bring back our Volunteer of the Month recognition program. As a reminder, for this program, we choose one member each month who has gone above and beyond the call of duty in their commitment to ATPE and public education. We look for volunteers who exhibit outstanding leadership and tireless efforts, and we’re relying on YOU for nominees.

Meet September’s Volunteer of the Month, Pat Duran of Temple ATPE!

What is your job title? Where do you work? How long have you been in this role?
I currently work as an elementary substitute teacher for Temple ISD. I am starting my fifth year as a substitute after retiring in 2014.

How long have you been an ATPE member? Why did you choose ATPE?
I have been in ATPE for 26 years, 21 as a professional and starting my fifth year as an associate member. I joined Texas Professional Educators (one of the two associations that eventually merged to form ATPE) back in 1977 when I first started teaching. TSTA had merged with NEA in 1975, and a union was not an option.

What advice would you give to a new educator coming into your position?
Stay positive and flexible. Sometimes the best-laid plans may not always work, so you need to adapt and find something that works with the class.

Share your favorite moment as an educator.
All of my teaching has been in pre-K or kindergarten. My favorite part is when a student has these “ah-ha” moments and the concept of “being taught” connects. Then there are students who might even remember you. I have had several of these greet me with a hug.

What’s your favorite Texas vacation?
My favorite places to travel are to the Corpus Christi area and to San Antonio.
