Tips for Substitutes

Substitute teaching can be challenging. No matter where that 5 a.m. phone call leads you, it’s your job to be ready to make the most of any situation. Below are a few tips to get you organized and prepared:

  • Be prepared for the call with pen and paper and answer the call personally if possible. You don’t want to waste the caller’s time making them wait for you to get to the phone.

  • If available, obtain the school district’s latest map indicating each school’s location, use it to map out your route so you won’t get lost.

  • Keep appropriate substitute teaching clothes ready and prepared for last-minute calls. You could be stepping in for a middle school soccer coach, a kindergarten teacher or a high school chemistry teacher.

  • Assemble a substitute backpack to serve as an emergency preparedness kit for the classroom. Personalize it to meet your needs and fit your teaching style. Include personal/professional items such as snacks, Band-Aids, disposable gloves and district information; classroom supplies such as rubber bands, markers, scissors, paper clips and name-tag materials; rewards/motivators such as certificates, stickers and stamps; and activity materials for the grade levels you are called to teach the most.

Nothing will make your job easier than being prepared, especially early in the morning.
