New proposed teacher evaluation system raises concerns

The state’s largest educator association has concerns about plans for a new teacher evaluation system recently announced by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Under the new plan, a small percentage of teachers—those who teach certain subjects and grades for which there are state standardized tests—would be evaluated in part using student test scores. The Association of Texas Professional Educators (ATPE) worries about raising the stakes of high-pressure student testing and potentially alienating teachers.

Educators should not fear backlash for taking teacher survey

TELL Texas, the first statewide survey of educators ever mandated by the Texas Legislature opened Monday. Although more than 24,000 educators have already participated in the survey, some teachers have expressed their concerns about possible repercussions from their administrators. However, the state’s largest educator association is working to reassure teachers that the survey is anonymous and should not result in any adverse employment actions.

Educators: Get ready to TELL Texas about your school!

The TELL (Teaching Empowering Leading and Learning) Texas survey is the first statewide survey of educators mandated by the Texas Legislature. For many years, the Association of Texas Professional Educators (ATPE) has urged the state to conduct such a survey in order to focus attention on the factors that affect both teacher retention and student success.

ATPE hosts ‘Shoot for the STAARs Education Day’

Texas elementary school students are tested in core subject areas such as reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies through the state’s STAAR exams. In order to help Houston-area students in grades 3–5 prepare for their upcoming tests, the Texas Southern University (TSU) chapter of the Association of Texas Professional Educators (ATPE) is hosting a free event Saturday, March 15.

Newly appointed ATPE Executive Director Gary Godsey will address the group at 10 a.m. on the Texas A&M University–Central Texas campus.

The state’s largest educator association is hosting a forum Feb. 20 for the four candidates vying to replace retiring State Representative Jim Pitts (R–Waxahachie). Pitts served the last three terms as chairman of the House Appropriations Committee and was one of the strongest allies of Speaker of the House Rep. Joe Straus (R–San Antonio).

State's top teachers value mentoring, training, public support

More training and support from school districts, administrators and teacher preparation programs will help retain better teachers in the classroom, according to a 2012-13 Texas Regional Teachers of the Year focus group report. The 17 teachers who participated in the focus groups recommend that every campus in the state have a teacher mentoring program, develop programs to bring the community into the classrooms and that teacher preparation programs allow student teachers more time in the classroom to observe teaching in action.

Special education teacher is new ATPE state president

The Association of Texas Professional Educators (ATPE) recently elected longtime member Ginger Franks as the association’s state president for the 2013-14 school year. Franks, a special education teacher in the Martinsville Independent School District, will represent the association and about 100,000 Texas public school educators who are members.  

Former Denton principal wins ATPE Administrator Educator of the Year Award

Denton Independent School District former assistant principal Martin H. Brumit was honored July 19 with the Association of Texas Professional Educators (ATPE) Administrator Educator of the Year Award. Brumit, a 19-year education veteran, was presented with the award plus a $1,000 check at the 2013 ATPE Summit Awards Banquet held at the Austin Convention Center.
