The First 5 Steps to Teacherdom

Some para-educators consider earning their teaching certificates to be the next logical career move. For others, it’s the realization of a dream put on hold by financial obstacles, family or other circumstances. Still others decide to teach because they want to give back to their communities in a new way, share their love of learning or gain recognition (and more pay) for their classroom experience. If you’re among these para-educators, take these steps to reach the head of the class.

  • RESEARCH the requirements and procedures for making the transition to teaching in Texas. Contact the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) at (888) 863-5880, or visit www.sbec.state.tx.us.

  • LEARN what to look for in a good teacher preparation program for para-educators: tuition assistance; flexible scheduling to allow you to continue working; availability of experienced mentors; college credit for life experience or previous training and course work; academic advising; and quality supervision.

  • EXPLORE the teacher preparation programs available, and find the program that’s best for you. Visit www.sbec.state.tx.us for a list of programs SBEC has approved for individuals who hold bachelor’s degrees and for those who must earn their degrees while seeking certification. Programs are offered by many colleges and universities, regional education service centers and some districts.

  • SEEK financial aid opportunities. Your first stop should be the financial aid office of the institution to which you are applying. Also visit www.sbec.state.tx.us for links to several other sources, including a state tuition-exemption program for educational aides who wish to become teachers. Federal aid is another available option. Learn more by visiting http://studentaid.ed.gov/ or calling (800) 4-FED-AID. Also find out if your current employer can help. Does your school or district offer tuition assistance or scholarships for para-educators interested in becoming teachers?

  • RESEARCH salaries.
