ATPE Book of the Month Club
Want to encourage your students to read for leisure and get more out of their reading? Every month we’ll choose one book
from each of three reading lists compiled by the Texas Library Association
and provide printable questions you can use with students for reflection or discussion. We’ll also link you to the Texas
Library Association’s selections for preschool through grade 2.
Certificate
Give students who have finished reading an ATPE Book of the Month selection a certificate for their efforts.

Teachers: Are you interested in reading one of the 2009-10 ATPE Book of the Month Club selections with your class? ATPE will select one teacher/class each month to read an upcoming book selection and create discussion questions for the selection. This is a great opportunity to engage your students in higher-order thinking skills. We’ll post a picture of the class on our Web site along with the discussion questions you’ve created, and we’ll send you a free copy of the book! Your class will also receive a special certificate upon completion. If you are interested in this valuable learning experience, please e-mail prof_dev@atpe.org.

Piper Reed: Navy Brat by Kimberly Willis Holt
Piper, a fourth-grader, is the middle child of the girls in the Reed household. She loves the fact that her father is in the Navy. She gets upset with her sisters because they actually refer to him as Dad, not Chief. As in all military families, moving is a part of the Reeds’ life. This time they are moving from San Diego to Pensacola. Piper’s older sister Tori thinks the Navy is ruining her life, and her younger sister Sam is a genius. Piper, who loves the Navy life and has dyslexia, sometimes feels that she doesn’t fit. Despite all of the differences, there is plenty of love in this family.
