ATPE Book of the Month Club
Want to encourage your students to read for leisure and get more out of their reading? Every month we’ll choose
one book from each of three reading lists compiled by the Texas Library Association
and provide printable questions you can use with students for reflection or discussion. We’ll also link you to the
Texas Library Association’s selections for preschool through grade 2.
Certificate
Give students who have finished reading an ATPE Book of the Month selection a
certificate for their efforts.

Crossing Bok Chitto by Tim Tingle
The Bok Chitto is a river that cuts through Mississippi. Choctaws live on one side of the river, and plantation owners
and their slaves live on the other. If a slave escapes and makes his way across Bok Chitto, the slave is free. Martha Tom,
a young Choctaw girl, finds herself on the other side of the river and starts a friendship that will lead seven slaves to
freedom.
