Established in 2000, the ATPE Foundation is dedicated to the advancement of public education through literacy initiatives, technology programs, and teacher recruitment and retention efforts. Foundation awards scholarships to outstanding future educators
The ATPE Foundation announced the names of its 2010 scholarship recipients during the Leader U Awards Dinner July 16.
The Barbara Jordan Memorial Scholarship, named for the late Texas congresswoman and educator, is awarded annually to up to six outstanding junior, senior and graduate students enrolled in educator preparation programs at predominantly ethnic-minority institutions. Recipients of $1,500 scholarships are:
- Kalinda Bass, University of Houston.
- Gabriella Bulos, University of Texas at El Paso.
- Andrew Hamilton, University of Houston.
- Gladys Hollis, University of Texas at Dallas.
- Sandra Ann Requenez, University of Texas Pan American.
- Sherine Taylor-Anderson, University of Texas at San Antonio.
The Fred Wiesner Educational Excellence Scholarship is named for one of ATPE’s founding members. The program awards four $1,500 scholarships to outstanding college students currently enrolled in educator preparation programs. If the number and quality of applicants allow, three scholarships are awarded each year to undergraduate college students, and one scholarship is awarded to a graduate student. The 2010 recipients are:
- Katie Apodaca, University of Texas at Dallas.
- Christina Di Pietro, University of Texas at Dallas.
- Becky Godell, Lamar University.
- Melissa Lorber, Texas Christian University.
Applications for the 2010-11 Barbara Jordan Memorial and Fred Wiesner Educational Excellence Scholarships are due June 1, 2011. Find more information and applications at www.atpefoundation.org.
Beth Ann Rogers Literacy Initiative
The ATPE Foundation presented $1,000 grants to six school libraries during May as part of the Beth Ann Rogers Literacy Initiative. Through the initiative, which is named for a late ATPE state president and school librarian, the foundation helps school libraries purchase literacy materials and modernize their resources. Five $1,000 grants will be awarded during the 2010-11 school year; visit www.atpefoundation.org for more information. The application deadline is Feb. 1, 2011.

Funds available for technology
The ATPE Foundation Technology Grant provides $2,500 to Texas public
school educators so they can purchase technology resources for classroom
use. Two grants will be awarded during the 2010-11 school year. For additional
information, including grant criteria, guidelines and an application, please
visit www.atpefoundation.org. Applications must be postmarked by Nov. 5.
