Welcome
Welcome! The second semester is in full swing, and it is a busy time of year for educators, ATPE members and Region 1 officers alike. March 5 is the deadline to send in forms, applications and nominations for the ATPE Educator, Local Unit and Campus Rep of the Year awards as well as the Ben Shilcutt Plus Club and the Sam Houston Award for Political Involvement. There are so many great things going on in Region 1 and I would really like to see our Region members garner some of these state accolades. In addition to these state awards, Region 1 will be conducting a PAC Challenge to encourage donations to the ATPE-PAC. The challenge will run from Feb. 1 through May 2, and there will be prizes for both the local unit and the member who contribute the most to ATPE-PAC. Our goal as a Region is contribute a total of $3,500 to ATPE-PAC this year. Mark your calendars and make plans to attend this year’s Region 1 Convention. The Region 1 Convention is highlighted by a Las Vegas-inspired theme and will feature a legislative update with ATPE Governmental Relations Director Brock Gregg, region officer elections and discussion of proposed bylaws amendments. Also included in the slate of events are a PAC Silent Auction, dinner and, as always, plenty of laughs among friends. Please check back periodically as the agenda and schedule of events will be posted soon. Finally, with the upcoming elections, it is imperative that teachers register to vote and make their collective voices heard. All of us, as educators, have been affected by recent changes made by the Legislature and will continue to be affected by the decisions and lack of importance placed on education by our current lawmakers. The best way to show our displeasure about those decisions is to vote! Roger Gutierrez Region 1 ATPE President
