Homeroom Heroes

The time: April 2–4, 2009!
The place: The Austin Convention Center!
The occasion: A meeting of ATPE’s supreme governing body, the ATPE House of Delegates! Delegates will make important decisions about education issues and the association’s future.
The preregistration/delegate certification deadline: March 4, 2009!

Convention Highlights

  • Meet a real-life hero! Called a “modern-day Thoreau” by Newsday, keynote speaker Rafe Esquith will share the story of Room 56, his remarkable inner-city Los Angeles classroom where class begins at 6:30 a.m. and reading Shakespeare is an everyday occurrence.
  • Save the day for public education! Take ATPE’s free shuttle to the Capitol the afternoon of Thursday, April 2, to meet with your legislators and watch the House and Senate in action.
  • Sharpen your superpowers! Increase your education acumen by earning up to 7 hours of continuing professional education (CPE) credit. (That’s an hour more than offered last year!)
  • Fill your utility belt! Shop the ATPE Exhibit Hall for goodies for yourself and your classroom. New this year: Visit the ATPE Bookstore to purchase books by the presenters whose professional development sessions you attend.
  • Debate the issues! Exercise your powers of persuasion as the House of Delegates discusses issues facing ATPE and Texas educators. Delegates will also elect ATPE’s 2009-10 state officers.
  • Celebrate your feats! Enjoy a night in the Big Apple during the Awards Banquet: ATPE Takes Manhattan. We’ll put the spotlight on your fellow homeroom heroes and unmask ATPE’s Educators of the Year.
