You might have seen promotions about our new website, TeachtheVote.org. If you haven’t already visited, take the time to do so!
TeachtheVote.org helps all Texas voters—not just ATPE members—find out where legislative and State Board of Education candidates stand on important public education issues and ATPE priorities. Simply enter your address into a search field when you visit the site, and a list of candidates running for office in your area will be populated. Once you know who the candidates are, you can view their profiles, which contain their responses to ATPE’s candidate survey, voting records on education-related legislation and other pertinent information. Using this information, you can decide which candidate most deserves your vote. (Currently, only information pertaining to State Board of Education candidates is available due to the ongoing legal battles over redistricting. Legislative candidate information will be posted by mid-April.)
Remember, turning out to support public education candidates during the primaries is especially important because the winners of many primary races will have no general election opponent; in some cases, the May 29 primary will decide who wins the office. So please visit TeachtheVote.org to educate yourself on where the candidates stand on public education issues, then get out and vote. And don’t forget to encourage your friends and colleagues to do the same.
